February is Dental Health Month!

We had a busy week getting back into the routine after the blizzard and learning about dental health!  The K-kids loved learning about the different types of teeth we have, why we have teeth, and how many teeth we have.  We even guessed how many teeth other animals  had and compared those numbers to our own.  The kids painted "yellow" teeth with white paint and thought about teeth facts they had learned.  They learned why you have to brush your teeth and how to take care of their teeth by brushing their teeth, flossing, eating healthy foods, and visiting the dentist two times a year.  The K-kids did a science experiment and poked a hole in an apple.  They observed it over the week under the magnifying class and watched as the hole got larger and brown.  At the end, we compared this hole to a cavity in a tooth and learned what happens when we do not take care of our teeth!

We also read stories about the tooth fairy.  The kids very creatively made tooth fairies out of construction paper and tissue paper and wrote about what the tooth fairy does with all of the teeth she (or he!) collects.  It was really fun to share the ideas.  These are on display in the hallway.

We also welcomed two parents into our classroom to share about countries!  Noah's mom shared pictures, blankets, and a coffee bag from Guatemala.  She taught the kids about what the country looks like, how people get around, and some major exports of Guatemala.  Annie's mom shared a doll, clothes, money, and a blanket from Ghana.  The kids loved learning about the kings and the story behind the blue and white blanket.  They also enjoyed eating their "gold" at the end.  Thank you again for helping to make the Around the World such a success!  We will be wrapping up parent presentations next week; if you would like to share please let me know!


We played math games this week that reinforced money, addition, and subtraction.  The kids are also getting very excited about the 100th day of school!  We have a countdown until then and have been really working on learning more about the tens and ones place and next week we will learn about the hundreds place!
