Jordan and China!

This week the Kindergarten kids traveled to Jordan and to China!  It was a long trip to both places, but the K-kids were really glad they went. :)  In Jordan, they learned about the different holidays and tried on the holiday clothes that are typically worn.  Zayd's dad also read to the kids in Arabic and showed how the print is read from right to left.  The Kids also looked at pictures of the flag, beautiful buildings and a man reading the paper while floating in the Dead Sea!  As always, the food was a big hit, and the kids enjoyed pita chips and hummus and a sweet bread/doughnut treat.  The kids than traveled to China.  They learned about pandas, The Great Wall, sports and school, and Chinese New Year.  The kids really enjoyed playing the drum toy that sounded like fireworks going off on the New Year and admiring the red and gold lantern.  Sophia's mom put together a wonderful slide show of pictures and a video of a man making a candy dragon for Sophia in China! 

After the parent presentation, the kids wrote in their travel journals and had their passports stamped so they can remember their Kindergarten "travels!"

Flat Stanley brought us some stories from around the world as well!  He traveled to Florida again (he must love the sun!) and told us about art structures that he saw with Lily's grandparents.  He also traveled to New York City and rode the subway, saw Central Park, and found the "Flatiron" Building with Zayd's family friends.  Zayd's family and friends also took him to Toronto to look at a large building there called the CN Tower!  We can't wait to find out where he goes next!

This week we celebrated peace, kindness, and creating a caring community through the study of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The K-kids listened to a story about him and learned about some difficulties that people faced before the Civil Rights Movement.  They were very compassionate and proud of how our classroom is today and that we are all friends and care for each other!  They also learned about Dr. King's dream and that his dream was a wish for our country and world.  They each wrote about and drew a wish of their own; these are up in the hallway with pictures of the children in our class!

In math this week, the K-kids learned and reviewed before, during and after and relating it to schedules and the number line.  They also learned more about double digit numbers and the tens and ones place.  The Kindergartners loved playing math games on Thursday and got to choose to play with pattern blocks, tens and ones sticks and bundles, calculators, pattern cookies, and addition dominoes.
