Extreme Weather

This week we focused on extreme weather, and the kids were fascinated by the science facts learned through the non-fiction books!  We learned about blizzards and snow, thunder and lightning storms, tornados and hurricanes.  The kids learned why each of these “storms” happen, how meteorologists use maps and radars to predict storms, and learned where some of these storms are most likely to happen.  We also made a tornado in a bottle – and the kids were so excited to watch the tornado over and over again!

The Kindergarteners made mini-books about weather this week and learned how to complete a word find using weather words.  They also made words and sentences using “word blocks” that they connected together.  During the Literacy Corners time the K-kids worked more in their phonics books and met with Ms. S. for reading groups each day.

Math time was busy as the Kindergarteners learned new games to play with their friends.  They practiced playing a graphing game using a dice and graphing the number for each roll.  They also played an addition domino game, and they turned the game into a concentration game.  Lastly, they learned to play “monster squeeze” and made a game board to bring home.  They also reviewed ways to measure items – a ruler for length, a thermometer for temperature, a scale for weight.  They learned more about the pan balance and comparing weights of items.  The Kindergartners practiced being pan scales with their hands and comparing the weights of different items.

Through our morning meetings this week, the Kindergarteners reviewed and discussed in depth the four Roycemore STAR behaviors.  Each morning we focused on one behavior (safe, trustworthy, appropriate, respectful), and the Kindergarteners were engaged in telling and listening to stories and conversations about that behavior and how the behavior is positively shown in the classroom.  It was wonderful to hear them have conversations and respond to each other’s stories with insightful comments and connections.  We wrapped up our review by choosing a behavior, drawing a picture about it, and writing a sentence about the positive behavior.  These are on display in the hallway.

Next week we will begin learning about the human body with an emphasis on bones, organs, and staying healthy by eating healthy food, exercising, and washing our hands!
