A spider! The Kindergarten kids LOVED learning about spiders this week! They were amazed by the spider facts and loved learning more about how spiders make webs and traps and the different types of spiders from around the world. To compliment the learning, the K-kids learned and drew pictures of the spider life cycle, wrote a fact and drew a picture, created an anatomically correct spider from construction paper, learned the names of the spider's body, and listened to many non-fiction books about spiders. As a class, we compared a spider to a human using a Venn Diagram. The K-kids also made spider webs and made thumbprint spiders and then added the legs of all of the spiders. Some of the Kindergarteners had more than 100 legs in their picture!
During Writer's Workshop, the kids learned why people make list, and they practiced making lists of different items. The challenge was to make a list of five or more items that were all related. They drew pictures to match, and they shared their lists in the share chair so the kids could guess the "title" of the list (grocery list, types of candy, Halloween items, etc.).
In math, the Kindergarteners revisited the concept of symmetry and used paint to make a symmetrical picture. They also learned how to finger count in two different African countries (very different than our typical system!), and they created patterns using spiders. We also learn and practice many math skills in our morning meeting routine; the focus during this time is mostly number recognition, tens and ones, tally marks, reading a thermometer, counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and identifying and adding money.
Thank you to the many parent volunteers we had for Carnival! The food and treat donations were perfect, and the extra hands at the class party made it a success! Because of the large volume of really cute pictures, I have made them into a I-movie (above this post).
