Land of Ladybugs!

We are loving the Land of Ladybugs! Our second week of Ladybug-themed learning projects began with brand new literacy corner activities. We learned the parts of a ladybug, made different colored bug books, and completed “Where are you, Ladybug?” books.

We also learned a new song that taught us about the body parts of an insect. The tune of this song helped us familiarize humans vs. bugs. (“Head, shoulders, knees and toes” became “Head, thorax, abdomen”…)

We again incorporated the friendly, colorful bugs into our math stories adding each other’s magic number of dots together to make addition number stories. Nothing is quite as visual as big bold dots to count!

By midweek, we explored the “Grouchy Ladybug” of Eric Carle. I think you’ll find that even our “grouchy ladybugs” are quite adorable.

Our Fine Arts Friday this week took a departure from the bold colors of ladybugs, and took a look at things in “black & white”, to learn about the photographic art of Ansel Adams. The students learned that the representation of shape and shadow in black and white create a window for us to imagine the color ourselves. They did this by taking their own photos around “Roycemore National Park” ;). I can’t wait to get these developed and see through the unique eyes of the K kids!

We added to our Writer’s Workshop library with nonfiction books. The kids were to write about something they knew all about so that they could share facts about a topic. We have some real experts!

Don’t be surprised if you see your very own ladybug at home, maybe doing the things that Ladybugs do, posing with cute as a bug smiles in their own set of antennae that we made for them to wear!
