Extra, extra!

The K-Kids had a great time going out to lunch on Monday!  They were so well behaved, remembered their manners, and enjoyed a lunch out with the friends.  A big thanks to Tim, the owner of Fuel in Wilmette, for accommodating us on Monday afternoon.

Interviews

The kindergarteners continued to learn about the newspaper this week.  The tickled their funny bones by writing comics and enjoyed sharing their comics with their friends.  They also experimented writing news stories based off a provided headline.  They practiced writing the piece by identifying the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions.  We also began our interviews this week and will feature the photography and writing pieces in our class newspaper that will be published the last week of school!

The kindergarteners practiced greater than, less than, and equal to signs this week by analyzing sports scores and using the <, >, = to show who won the games.  It was a great way to tie in newspapers to our math study as the students learned that sports scores of local teams and professional teams can be found on the sports page.  They also looked at weather maps and practiced creating their own weather maps and prediction for the temperatures.  This was another great way to incorporate reading and writing numbers 0 through 100 and identifying ranges of numbers (ex. the 80s includes 80 through 88, etc.).  They may give Tom Skilling a run for his money with their excellent weather predictions! :)

We also added two new pieces to our art museum!  We learned about Frida Kahlo and explored a different side of art - one that expresses sad and/or angry emotions.  The kindergarteners drew pictures of a time that they felt sad or upset and used colors to show their emotions.  They also wrote about their pictures.  The kindergarteners also learned about Mary Cassatt.  Mary Cassatt loved to paint pictures of families with an emphasis on mothers and children.  It was a very hard drawing, but the kindergarteners did their best to draw the family picture they brought in.  They focused on drawing the people in perspective to the photo and then filled in the background with the photo details.  I can't wait to share these with you at the art show next week!
