The Kindergarten Kids learned about weather this week with a focus on clouds. We started the new theme by brainstorming and discussing what weather is and how the temperature is important in weather and the four seasons (in our area). The kids learned to read a thermometer and also learned at what point water freezes and boils. It was a hard concept to grasp for some, but we also talked about how it can be cloudy on a warm day and very sunny on a cold day. After reviewing weather and reading a thermometer, the kids made a "weather forecast" page. Then they used the VoiceThreads to be a "meteorologist" and share their weather reports. The K-kids also learned the names of the different types of clouds and when you might see those clouds in the sky. They pretended to see cloud shapes in the sky as they listened to the story, It Looked Like Spilt Milk, and then used paint to make a "cloud" shape. Next week we will try to guess our friends' cloud shapes!
In math this week we played a fun game that taught beginning graphing skills as well as probability. We will play this game throughout the year to add numbers, subtract numbers, and create bar and plot graphs. We also practiced writing numbers 0-9 using correct number strokes. Please encourage your child to write numbers as well as letters at home and pay close attention to the starting point of each number and letter! I will send home reminders about the Handwriting without Tears prompts that we use for both.
