During Writer’s Workshop, the Kindergarteners are learning to edit their writing by following a checklist. The checklist includes: Did I start my sentence with an uppercase letter? Does my picture match my words? Did I put spaces between my words? Did I stretch my words to hear the sounds? I am so impressed with the stories the K-kids have been telling each day and the progress of their writing. They are so proud of their work and their abilities to write sentences on their own to share in the share chair.
The Evanston firefighters visited us this week to help promote fire safety awareness! They talked to the kids about the importance of having smoke detectors, leaving matches and fire alone, and if there is a fire in the house to get OUT! The firefighters put their fire safety gear on and shared what each part did (oxygen tank, mask, boots, coat). This was important because when the firefighters had their gear on, they were pretty scary! Many kids will hide under a bed during a house fire and be even more scared of the firefighter there to help. This process helped our K-kids realize that even under all of the noisy oxygen tanks and heavy gear, there is a gentle and kind community helper! Please help your child learn his/her phone number and establish a safe meeting place outside the house in case there is ever an emergency or fire.
